Equipment Operator

                                                                                                                                                           

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

Performs intermediate semiskilled work operating a dump truck, back hoe, loader or related motorized equipment; does related work as required.  Work is performed under regular supervision.  

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping and repetitive motions.  Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word.  Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.  Visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length.  Operation of machines, motor vehicles and equipment is required.  Must be accurate and thorough with work and observant of general surroundings and activities.  The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions to include extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.  The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized protective equipment.

SALARY RANGE:

$28,881.00 - $43,321.00

TYPICAL TASKS:

Operating backhoe, loader, dump truck, street sweeper and related motorized equipment; performing general maintenance work

Operates equipment in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, utility lines and related facilities

Pours concrete to construct or repair sidewalks and driveways

Operates dump truck hauling sand, dirt rock and soil piles

Picks up leaves, limbs, debris, etc.

Cleans truck and equipment; performs preventive maintenance on equipment

Spreads asphalt and patches holes in street surfaces

Performs landscaping duties, cuts grass, maintains lawn equipment

Puts up and removes seasonal displays

Installs and replaces roadway and warning signs

Acts as flagger

Performs other public works, utilities and maintenance duties as assigned

Performs related tasks as required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

General knowledge of operating and servicing of automotive equipment, thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation, safe driving practices, knowledge of occupational hazards of the work, ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions, ability to detect signs of mechanical failure of equipment, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduating from high school and some street maintenance, landscaping and equipment operation experience

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina; Possession of or ability to acquire CPR and First Aid certifications; May require public pesticide operator certification depending on assignment
